They call me "brokeback" in prison, I mean at church.
The Unfortunate Sequel
The good news is, I met my deductible for the year haha. Just recently, I was training double flips in the foam pit (again) when my leg caught a mat on top of the foam on the way down, snapping the end of my fibula and tibia. I was sent to the second surgery for the year only 6 months after my last operation for my wrist.
Prior to this, I just landed a few sponsorship deals for 2017, including the notorious Fly Racing, but already felt reluctant to follow through with the contracts due to not being able to perform for a few months. Never the less, I’m doing my best to make lemonade out of lemons (or barbeque with the coal I got for Christmas last year), and spent my down time investing in myself to more effectively invest in others.
To capitalize my time off the bike, I decided to do things training 6 days a week doesn’t allow. I recently obtained my personal training certification through the NSCA to better train myself and pro athletes (specifically in motocross and FMX). By doing this, I should better be able to capitalize on my recovery time and off-season while adding value to others I can train while rehabbing.
When I’m not training, I’ve spent most of my time investing in books, reading close to two dozen books since the last operation, training my mind while not being able to train my body, learning habits from professional athletes such as Olympians Michael Phelps and Shawn White, athlete mindset from Dan Millman, how to master any skill from Robert Greene, perseverance from Colton Moore, and learning what it takes to be the best in Travis Pastrana’s autobiography. Eventually, I began taking up ideas and seeing patterns in these individuals, and started writing a book of my own, which the rough draft should be completed by the start of 2018. This endeavor both excites and intimidates me, but I know my desire is equal to the task.
(More to come on this)
Lastly, while reading and not being able to walk, I decided to partner in a social media and internet marketing agency, becoming part owner of a company based out of Nashville, TN. Because of this, we will be able to help businesses grow their services and add new customers by leveraging social media advertising and Internet marketing. This truly excites me because it is serving others; our highest purpose, and we believe Internet marketing and social media is the most effective way to serve people both as clients and customers to these businesses.
Needless to say, 2017 is lit, burning at both ends, bettering myself to better others, and bettering others to better myself. Stay tuned for more exciting info!!! ;)
Foam Pit Fail
Earlier that day, after months of watching film, visualization, and gymnastics training, I was finally getting double flips around on Kenny's 85cc. Anthony Murray (another dude you want to keep your eyes on), was working on a few tricks for the X Games while helping me experiment with ramp angles and distances. Once I got it the double on the 85, we pulled the ramp back to 52' and propped it up four more inches to 20" total to try one last attempt on the 85 before taking it to the 450. Apparently 3ft back and an additional 4 inches steeper made the 85cc "G-out" and collapse into the ramp once I hit it, and threw me off balance carving me about 25 feet to the right off the ramp, and falling about 25-30 ft in the air to flat next to the foam pit.
Miraculously, I ended up only breaking my wrist and having a minor concussion (too minor for Will Smith). Stillwater ER said I would be back on the bike in six weeks, but once I got a second opinion, I ended up needing surgery due to a dislocation and fracture in two places of the scaphoid.
Since the crash was caught on tape, there happened to be a lot of publicity, even Britain's top motocross magazine, Dirt Bike Rider, actually picked up on the crash and did a short article on it. A few other guys spread it on social media, and is now close to 100,000 views on Instagram, which I can't tell if I am pumped or embarrassed by the whole thing, haha.
